In memoriam: Matti Kuhakoski, CFA (1961-2023)

With great sorrow, the CFA Society Finland announces the loss of Matti Kuhakoski, CFA, a valued member of our community and a distinguished investment professional, who passed away after battling an illness.

Matti received his Charter in 1999, among the first Charterholders in Finland. His interest in the program was sparked while working in New York in the late 1990s, where he was part of a group of Finnish expatriates who shared a similar passion. Upon their return to Finland, they brought with them their newfound knowledge and inspiration.

In 2002, Matti was one of the founding members of the CFA Society Finland and served as its second president in 2002-2003. During his leadership, he inspired many colleagues to pursue the CFA charter and become active members of the society, playing a pivotal role in its early growth and eventual prominence within the investment community in Finland.

Throughout his career, Matti held executive positions at several large domestic banks and insurance companies and was a co-founder of an asset management firm. During the decades of investment profession, Matti gained strong knowledge on various asset classes, and he had ability to understand complex structures and explain them in simple terms. As a former national level ice hockey goalkeeper, he was competitive but always very supportive, and he really was an excellent team player.

Matti was a dedicated friend of the CFA Society Finland and a mentor to many. In addition to local society, he was an active volunteer for CFA Institute and its predecessor AIMR. He will be remembered for his numerous contributions to the investment community, his guidance to colleagues and aspiring investment professionals, and his unwavering dedication to the Society. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.

The CFA Society Finland extends its sincere condolences to Matti's family and loved ones during this trying time, and to all those who were touched by his life and work.

Authored by Mikko Niskanen, CFA and Ville Toivakainen, CFA
